Miedo me da. La digitalización de Google es bastante chapucera, no quiero ni imaginarme qué conversión a ePub habrán hecho. Pero bueno, tampoco quiero criticar sin haberlo probado antes, aunque los primeros pálpitos no son nada buenos.

Entra en el programa de Sony Library... Store... y en la parte de la derecha hay un banner

Eso, y, ¿desaparece los productos y la división de e-books de Sony, o no? ¿sacan o anuncian nuevos modelos, o no? ¿la integran con la división Vaio ("Vaio PRS-600"), o no?

Por los foros de mobileread, parece que los actuales modelos han sido realmente suprimidos y dejados de suministrar, y al contrario de la costumbre, no hay nada anunciado, y tampoco parece que puedan esperar al ciclo de anuncios y productos nuevos habitual de Octubre de Sony.

Este tipo de noticias, por el contrario, apuntan hacia que no.

Sony sigue dotando de contenidos a su lector de libros electrónicos por medio de su tienda online. Amazon se ha plantado de forma muy seria en el mercado con su Kindle y la pugna es dura.

Así que nada mejor que anunciar que tienes un millón de libros al alcance de un clic de lector para posicionarse en el mercado. ¿Y quién es la pareja de baile con la que ha llegado Sony a un acuerdo para ello? Pues con Google, quién si no. La compañia del buscador ha puesto a disposición de la compañía japonesa un millón de libros fruto de la digitalización de los mismos con su servicio Google Books.

El acceso a los libros es gratuito, y vienen en el formato EPUB optimizado para los lectores de Sony. Solo es necesario tener el lector de Sony y descargar el software de la página de la empresa.

eBook Store from Sony is Now the Largest Source for eBooks

SAN DIEGO, July 29, 2009 – The eBook Store from Sony, together with Google, today announced it is providing access to more than 1 million free public domain books – from classics such as Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island to biographies, historical texts, romance novels and hundreds of other genres. The announcement reinforces Sony’s commitment to providing consumers with the largest, most comprehensive selection of eBooks available. These titles, which Google has digitized as part of its Google Books project, are available in EPUB format and are optimized for current models of the Sony Reader Digital Book.

“We are committed to ensuring our customers have the freedom to discover and read content from the widest possible range of sources,” said Chris Smythe, director of the eBook Store from Sony. “We’re proud to offer access to the broadest range of eBooks today – from hot new releases, to New York Times Best Sellers, to classics and hard to find manuscripts such as those available for free from Google.”

From Sony’s eBook Store (ebookstore.sony.com), Reader owners with a U.S. location can download and transfer any of these titles to their PRS-505 or PRS-700 Reader. New eBook Store users can access available titles after setting up an account and downloading Sony’s free eBook Library software.

“As more and more people discover digital reading, it’s important to build an open platform to help them access and read books online,” said Adam Smith, product management director at Google. “We’re pleased to continue our collaboration with Sony so that more people around the world can discover and enjoy these books.”

About the Reader

The Reader Digital Book’s high-resolution electronic paper display delivers a realistic print look that rivals traditional paper and uses minimal power. A single battery charge provides up to 7,500 pages of continuous reading. The ease of changing font sizes can make every eBook a large print book and enables libraries to improve accessibility for patrons with poor vision.

In addition to electronic books, the current Reader models support multiple file formats for personal documents and music. You can easily transfer Adobe PDF documents with reflow capability, Microsoft Word documents, BBeB files and other text file formats to the Reader. SAN FRANCISCO, July 29 (Reuters) - Sony Corp (6758.T) said on Wednesday it has made available over 1 million public domain books on its electronic readers via Google Inc's (GOOG.O) Books project, which digitizes classic titles not protected by copyright.

Sony, Amazon.com (AMZN.O), Barnes & Noble Inc (BKS.N) and others are racing to beef up their offerings to meet growing demand for digital books on electronic readers: tablet-like devices where whole books can be stored and read.

Although the devices do not appeal to all readers, due to their cost and technical issues yet to be fully resolved, the companies are trying establish a toehold in a market they believe will eventually become a profit driver.

Sony said the addition of Google's library gives it the largest, most comprehensive array of electronic books available in the market.

Last week, U.S. bookseller Barnes & Noble announced what it touted as the world's largest online bookstore, with more than 700,000 titles. That selection includes more than half a million public domain books from Google.

Amazon's Kindle store offers over 300,000 titles. The Seattle-based online retailer said it would not comment on whether it planned to include Google's titles as well.

Sony was the first to market with its Sony Reader in 2006 and now sells two versions of the device. The launch of the Sony Reader was eclipsed a year later when Amazon entered the market with its Kindle, now also sold in two formats.

Privately owned Plastic Logic plans to enter the market early next year with its own e-reader, and Barnes & Noble said it will be that device's exclusive provider of digital books.

One major issue impeding consumer adoption of digital readers is the closed system of sharing.

In Amazon's case, titles purchased through the Kindle Store can be read on the Kindle and Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) iPhone or iPod Touch, but not on the Sony Reader. Barnes & Noble's titles, meanwhile, are accessible on Apple devices and Research in Motion Ltd's (RIM.TO) Blackberry, but not on the Kindle or Sony Reader.

Todo el millón es de los libre de derechos?
Porque me parece que google tiene muchos también con los de derechos (vi en google muchos, y se puede leer sólo la portada, y en algunos casos algunas partes de libro).
